This is an interesting article but posted in 2005 - I would be very interested in reading an update to this to reflect what the risks and things to be aware of with VoIp is now.

Comment on TriGeo Network Security Positioned in Visionaries Quadrant for 2006 Magic Quadrant for Security Information and Event Management by PigBear

The Trigeo product fails at the very outset of what it is supposed to do. Unlike every other product on the market it does not offer a dashboard to aggregate the events. Instead there's a console with tabs showing ALL of the events scrolling by at full speed and you can be alerted by creating special tabs or by email. This is not what log aggregation should be. I could do this for free with Kiwi Syslog if I want to drink from the fire hose.

Additional issues I have with the unit - having inherited it and used it for a year:

Custom Filters are saved on the local machine – you lose them if software is re-installed/PC crashes, etc.

Reports are scheduled via Windows Task Manager on the machine where the local install of the reporting module is rather than on the Trigeo host itself. This requires an account to run the task and all the other issues surrounding run tasks on a local machine. Reports, as with other products, should be run and stored on the appliance.

Agents frequently stop collecting/reporting, requiring touching the machine to stop and restart the hung agent is on – Windows & AIX. Once the agents are restarted they overwhelm the appliance with backed up logs causing it to send email alerts that the space is low on the unit.

Appliance randomly becomes unresponsive to console connections. Reboot is necessary to restore connectivity.

No custom reports. For example I have a filter set to log and notify of after hours logins (i.e. weekends, etc.). You cannot create a custom report for this information. You can only generate their canned reports.

For $19k+ this product fails in comparison to other products I've evaluated such as AdventNet's Eventlog Analyzer and Q1 Labs Qradar. Nice dashboards with color coded aggregation - i.e. there were 100 of this event and you can then drill down to see the individual events.

If you're thinking of the Trigeo evaluate other vendors as well. It will save you a headache later.

Laptop theft would usually occur when you leave your laptop home, in the office, or at school. A simple solution to the problem could be phyically locking them away. There are plenty of options available now on the market such as laptop trolleys, wall mounted cages, cables etc.
